HCPL’s Book of the Month: River of Stars

river of starsRiver of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay

In 12th Dynasty Kitai, the fates of a warrior, a free spirit, and an emperor collide in a tale of intrigue, romance, and war.

Ren Daiyan was still just a boy when he took the lives of seven men while guarding an imperial magistrate of Kitai, eventually launching him into a military career serving the emperor of a region hurtling towards war.

Lin Shan is the daughter of a scholar. Gifted as a songwriter and calligrapher, she finds herself living a life suspended between two worlds. Her intelligence captivates an emperor and alienates the women at court, drawing her into the savage politics of the day.

Emperor Wenzong rules an empire divided by bitter factions, but the exquisitely cultured emperor loves his gardens and his art far more than the burdens of governing. Dramatic events on the northern steppe of Kitai alter the balance of power in the world, leading, under the river of stars, to consequences no one could have foretold.

River of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay is available to reserve at the Haliburton County Public Library and a nominee for the 2014 Evergreen™ Award. Read as many on the Evergreen list as you like and vote for your favourite in October.
