stand by meStand by Me

In Castle Rock, Oregon, four boys set off on a journey that will bring them face-to-face with the wonder and cruelty of the world and the challenges of growing up. Vern Tessio overhears his older brother, Billy, talking about the dead body of Ray Bower, who was hit by a train. The town of Castle Rock has been transfixed by the disappearance and search for the missing boy, and Vern and his friends Gordie Lachance, Chris Chambers, and Teddy Duchamp set out to beat Billy to finding the body and achieving town notoriety. They set off through the woods, following the train tracks and pursued by Billy and his posse of goons, all confronting their own personal pressures and tragedies. As they travel deeper and deeper into unknown territory and face numerous close calls, their adventure becomes more than just a search for a missing boy.

Stand by Me is based on the novella The Body published in Stephen King’s collection of short stories Different Seasons. All can be reserved at the Haliburton County Public Library.
