ship breakerShip Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi

When Nailer narrowly escapes an oily death while scavenging copper wire from a grounded oil tanker, he earns the nickname “Lucky Boy”. But his luck takes another turn when after a city killer storm rips through the ship yards he finds the wreck of a luxurious clipper ship. Nailer is faced with a decision, strip the ship of its riches, or rescue the beautiful survivor on board who could lead him to a better life.

Ship Breaker takes place in a near and uncertain future, when the seas have risen, trading ships carrying hostages and half-dog-half-men blast over the melted North Pole and the continent is covered in hot smothering jungle.

Winner of the 2010 Michael L. Printz Award for best young adult novel, Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi is available in audiobook at the Haliburton County Public Library.
