It’s the 19th Century and the sun never sets on the British Empire. A young Mycroft Holmes is fresh out of Cambridge and already making a name for himself in the British government working for the Secretary of State of War. But his comfortable existence is overturned when his best friend Cyrus Douglas receives troubling reports from his home in Trinidad – there are rumours of mysterious disappearances and spirits enticing children to their deaths. When Mycroft’s own fiancée abruptly departs for Trinidad, he convinces Douglas that they should follow her and the two men are drawn into a dark web of secrets that grows more treacherous with each step they take.
Mycroft Holmes is written by Sherlockian and NBA superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with screenwriter Anna Waterhouse. Abdul-Jabbar reveals the untold story of Sherlock Holmes’ older brother, examining British colonialism and Trinidad’s history, as he tells a harrowing adventure that sets the stage for the man Mycroft will become – the hidden power behind the British government. Mycroft Holmes by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Anna Waterhouse is available to reserve at the Haliburton County Public Library.
When the Supervisor of the Dysart Branch of the Haliburton County Public Library gets excited about a book, it moves. Vicki Fraser’s excitement is contagious and led to this reader’s recent fixation on The Obsession by Nora Roberts, a standalone romantic suspense. The story tells the tale of eleven year old Naomi Bowes, who lost her innocence the night she followed her father into the woods and witnessed him locking the root cellar in the forest. Naomi finds a girl trapped in there and in freeing the victim, Naomi reveals the horrible extent of her father’s crimes and makes him infamous. Now a successful photographer living under a new name, she has found a place that calls to her, a rambling old house in need of repair, thousands of miles away from everything she’s ever known. Naomi wants to embrace the solitude, but the kindly residents of Sunrise Cove keep forcing her to open up—especially the determined Xander Keaton. Naomi can feel her defenses failing, and knows that the connection her new life offers is something she’s always secretly craved. But the sins of her father can become an obsession, and, as she’s learned time and again, her past is never more than a nightmare away. The Obsession can be requested through any of the eight library branches in Haliburton County.
