Oh, Canada… are you looking for Can Lit? #CanadaDay2015

Canadian literature isn’t just prairies and lighthouses anymore… though you can still find that too! There is a wide variety of Can Lit to enjoy, and something for just about every preference whether you like romance, contemporary literature, science fiction, crime fiction, or humour. If you are looking for Canadian Literature, here are some places to start.

HL Novelist PlusNoveList is a database containing just about every book you can imagine. If you know that you like a particular book, you can search for it and find other books that are similar. One of the first subject headings in NoveList is Canadian Fiction. Choose Canadian Fiction A-Z if you aren’t sure what you are looking for. If you know you like Crime Fiction there is a Canadian Crime list, or if the gothic novel is a little more your taste you might find some Southern Ontario gothic under Set in… Ontario. To access NoveList, go to the Readers’ Advisory section of our website and click on the NoveList link. When you find a book you like, click on “Search the Library Catalogue” and it will bring you back to our website where you can place a hold if we have the book. If we don’t have the book, put in a request with one of our staff… we just might be able to get it!

evergreenThe Evergreen Award is part of the Ontario Library Association’s Forest of Reading Program, and one of the few awards in which library patrons get to vote for their favourite of 10 Canadian books. The list comes out at the end of January, and patrons vote in October. Whether you already love Can Lit or are just getting into it, the Evergreen Award list is a great place to start. Evergreen displays can be found at many of our branches, and the titles and descriptions are available on the Evergreen section of our website. To participate in the Evergreen Award program, just start reading! Read as many of the titles as you want, and watch for polling stations at a branch near you in October.

HL goodreadsicoWe love Goodreads! We use it for HCPL’s Online Book Club, but we also use it to find books, book reviews, and keep track of what we’re reading. If you are looking for Can Lit, check out Listopia on Goodreads and search for Canadian. There are a number of community generated lists full of Canadian books that others have enjoyed.

Quill and Quire Magazine

This monthly publication focuses on the latest news in the Canadian publishing scene, and features in-depth articles and book reviews. You can surf their website, or you can find the paper copy at HCPL in our magazine collection.

Browse and look for the canada flag emoji sticker

Visit any of our branches and browse our shelves, and you’ll notice some of our books have a maple leaf sticker on the spine. This sticker indicates that the author is Canadian. We use stickers to denote other collections as well, including local authors, graphic novels, Evergreen Award nominees and young adult books – so when you are browsing our shelves it makes these books easier to find.

Ask Us!

Many of our staff enjoy reading Can Lit. Ask them what their favourite Canadian book is… maybe it will wind up being your favourite too!
