Growing up in a foster family in Germany during the horrors of World War II, she finds solace in those stolen books and sharing them with others including Max, the young Jewish man her foster parents are sheltering in their basement. As the war escalates, Leisel learns lessons of love, loyalty and loss all against the backdrop of one of the most tragic periods in world history.

The Book Thief, based on the award winning novel by Markus Zusak, was nominated for an Oscar for its original score written by John Williams. The Book Thief, along with the novel of the same name, is available to reserve at the Haliburton County Public Library.
